Buffer Alternatives for Small Businesses

Buffer is a good scheduler. The reason small businesses go looking for something else is usually one of three: the per-channel pricing adds up faster than expected, the free plan runs out at ten scheduled posts, or — most often — scheduling was never the hard part. Writing the posts was.

Here are six alternatives, what each one costs, and who each one is actually for. We make one of them, and we have said so where it appears.

What Buffer does well

Worth saying before the alternatives, because for a lot of people the answer is "stay on Buffer".

Buffer is one of the cleanest publishing tools available. It connects to more networks than most small businesses will ever use, the composer is quick, the free plan genuinely works, and its AI Assistant will write and reword post copy on every plan. If you already write your own posts and just want them queued, Buffer at $5 a channel is hard to beat.

Why people look for an alternative

The per-channel pricing. Buffer's Essentials plan is $5 per channel per month, and a channel is one social account. A Facebook Page, an Instagram account and a LinkedIn profile is three channels, so $15 a month. Add a second location or a second brand and it doubles. The Team plan is $10 per channel.

The free plan is a trial, not a home. Free covers 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, with 30 days of analytics history. That is enough to see whether you like it, and most businesses hit the ceiling within a month.

It schedules; it doesn't create. Buffer's AI Assistant writes text, but there is still a blank box waiting for you every week, and no image comes out of it. If your problem is "I don't know what to post today", a better scheduler doesn't solve it.

Six Buffer alternatives

1. BlinkPost — if the writing is the problem

This is our product.

BlinkPost works the other way round from Buffer. You describe the business once — or point it at your website — and it writes the post, the opening hook, the hashtags, the keywords and a matching AI image, then schedules and publishes it to Facebook Pages, Instagram Business accounts and LinkedIn. You review and edit everything before it goes out. See real examples on the AI social media post generator page.

Pricing: Free plan, 2 posts a month and 2 connected accounts, no credit card. Pro is $19.99 a month (or $16 a month billed yearly) for 30 posts and 5 accounts. Agency is $59 a month (or $47 billed yearly) for 120 posts and 50 accounts.

Choose Buffer instead if you post to TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, YouTube or X, if you need more than 120 posts a month, or if you already write your own copy and only want it queued. BlinkPost connects to Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn today (TikTok is coming soon), and its pricing is built around how many posts it writes for you.

2. Later — if Instagram is the main channel

Later grew up as an Instagram tool and still shows it: visual planning, a grid preview, and a link-in-bio product. It covers Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat.

Pricing: Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly — one social set of 8 profiles, 30 posts per profile per month, 1 user, 5 AI credits. Growth is $37.50 and Scale is $82.50. There is a 14-day trial.

Worth knowing: Later's cheapest plan costs more than Buffer's Essentials for a typical three-account small business, and the AI credits are metered. You are paying for the visual planning.

3. Metricool — if you want analytics without an agency price

Metricool is a scheduler with unusually strong analytics and competitor tracking for the money, and it handles multiple brands well.

Pricing: Free covers 1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a month and 5 AI credits. Starter runs about $20–25 a month for up to 10 brands. Advanced is about $53–67 a month for up to 50 brands and unlimited team members. Prices vary by currency and billing period.

Worth knowing: the free plan's 20 posts a month is more generous than Buffer's free plan for a single-brand business, and the reporting is the reason most people switch to it.

4. Publer — if you want a free plan that lasts

Publer's free plan covers 3 social accounts and 10 scheduled posts per account, with 1 user — comparable to Buffer's free tier, with a bulk scheduler and a recycling feature that Buffer keeps for paid plans.

Pricing: paid plans are built from add-ons, so you pick the number of accounts and users rather than a fixed tier. Check publer.com/pricing for the current numbers before you commit.

5. Hootsuite — if you have a team and a budget

Hootsuite is the enterprise end of this list. Standard is $99 per user per month billed annually for 10 social accounts; Professional is $199 and Advanced is $399. There is a 14-day trial.

Be honest about the fit: at $99 a month for one user, Hootsuite costs more per year than most of this list costs in three. It buys approval workflows, social listening and enterprise reporting. A one-person business does not need any of that.

6. Meta Business Suite — if you only post to Facebook and Instagram

Meta's own tool is free and schedules to Facebook Pages and Instagram. If those are your only two channels and you write your own posts, you may not need a third-party tool at all. It has no LinkedIn, no AI writing, and its analytics stop at what Meta chooses to show you.

How to choose

You write your own posts and want them queued cheaply. Stay on Buffer, or move to Publer's free plan. Nothing here beats $5 a channel for pure scheduling.

You stare at a blank box every Monday. That is a content problem, not a scheduling one, and a cheaper scheduler will not fix it. BlinkPost, or Buffer's AI Assistant plus a separate image tool.

You need to prove what social media is doing. Metricool, for the reporting at a small-business price.

You have a team, approvals and a budget. Hootsuite.

How to move off Buffer

  1. Export your scheduled posts from Buffer before you cancel — the queue does not transfer automatically to anything.
  2. Connect your accounts in the new tool first, while Buffer is still running. Instagram in particular needs a Business account linked to a Facebook Page, and that step catches people out.
  3. Rebuild one week of posts in the new tool and let both run in parallel for that week.
  4. Check that the first few posts actually published, with the images intact.
  5. Then cancel Buffer. Downgrade rather than delete if you want the analytics history.
